Hope, even false hope, is better than no hope.
The year is 1860 before land reform in Ireland. Maurya O’Connor has lost her husband in a tragic accident and is left alone with her 12 year old son Paddy to eke out an existence on their poor tenant farm in Mayo. After many months of being in arrears, Robert Whitehead, the agent for the National Bank, informs the O’Connors that they will lose their farm, and be evicted in a week's time if the debt is not paid off in its entirety. Two brothers, Liam and John Joseph Keough stop for help at the O’Connor’s cottage after younger brother, John Joseph, has been wounded. Maurya nurses the wounded member of the Rightboys back to health and before leaving they give mother and her son the monies needed to pay off their debt. Liam, unbeknownst to Maurya, also gives Paddy a revolver for protection. Days later, after paying Robert Whitehead and getting the note signed off, the bank agent is robbed by two men (The Rightboys) who steal his money, horse and boots. In complete disarray Whitehead returns to the O’Connor farm demanding the use of their horse.
