“We may have thought we’ve seen it all and that no new Holocaust book, story, play or film could surprise us or move us as deeply…Now along comes Micki Kessler’s Tribunal.”
---Eric Marchese, The Orange County Register
Set against the background of the Nuremburg Trials, Izzy, a young survivor of the camps and a translator is given the task of transcribing hours of Nazi testimony using new technology for the first time. Hannah was a music professor, now, a starving Nazi digging through the ruins of her once prominent city. Her hunger driving her to steal food, she finds her way to the office of Izzy, who rather than outing her, offers her a job – help with the translations. She helps him to catch all the nuances and colloquia of the German language in exchange for food and cash. As they come to know each other, these natural enemies explore and try to resolve the larger issues facing the post-Holocaust world: rage, shame, uncertainty, a way to forgiveness – universal questions that follow every global disaster. 20 years after their initial meeting, they come back together to learn if they – if we – can ever change who we are.
EagerReads is a New Play Development Effort by EagerRisk Theater to support and gain exposure for new, eager, and risky playwrights, showcasing work in an inviting and professional atmosphere.
